What is an API integration in commercial real estate?
An API integration lets software systems exchange data or actions. Learn how integrations work in CRE and what to check before relying on one.
An application programming interface (API) defines how software can interact with another system. An API integration uses that interface to exchange data or request actions between applications.
A CRE example
Imagine a property management platform sharing approved unit availability with a leasing website. An integration could retrieve the available units and update the listings. This is an illustrative workflow; actual capabilities depend on the systems and permissions involved.
What does “integrated” actually mean?
The word alone does not explain what moves between products. One integration might read a few fields once a day. Another might send changes in both directions. Neither guarantees that every record or workflow is supported.
Four questions to ask
- Which data or actions are supported, and in which direction?
- How often does information update?
- What permissions are required, and who controls access?
- What happens if a request fails or records do not match?
For example, two systems may identify the same building differently. Someone must decide how those records map before a connection can produce useful results.
