What is an ideal customer profile (ICP)?

An ideal customer profile describes the companies best suited to your product. Learn what to include, with a practical B2B startup example.

An ideal customer profile (ICP) describes the type of organization most likely to benefit from your product and become a valuable customer. In business-to-business markets, it helps teams decide which accounts to pursue.

What belongs in an ICP?

Useful attributes can include industry, company size, location, operating model, and existing technology. Add the problem the company needs to solve and the conditions that make it urgent. Base the profile on customer evidence as it becomes available.

A practical example

Suppose a startup sells software for maintenance coordination. “Real estate companies” is broad. A more useful starting hypothesis might be: regional multifamily operators with centralized maintenance teams who still coordinate requests across disconnected systems.

Interviews and product usage can reveal whether that segment has the need, budget, and ability to adopt the tool. The profile should change when evidence contradicts it.

ICP versus buyer persona

The ICP describes the organization. A buyer persona describes a person involved in the decision, such as an operations leader, including that person’s goals and concerns. You may need several personas within one ideal customer account.

Use your ICP to focus outreach and research, then test the assumptions before committing your roadmap to them.
